The establishment of the Robertsdale Church of God dates around back to around 1910-12 when the
Reverend
Austin Belty held religious services at Robertsdale. Belty and his wife Evelyn who was also
active in the church
came to the community from Huntingdon, West Virginia.
The founding fathers of the Robertsdale Church
of God were actually converts of a long revival held
around that time at the United Methodist Church. These religious
laymen took steps to organize the church
and set up Sunday School services for their followers.
The first evangelist, Sister Norma Hunter founder of the church's National Society also held a tent meeting
at Robertsdale
for several weeks in 1912.
It is not certain when the religious sect moved into the original building
but it was probably around the
same time that the groupd laid the groundwork for the Church of God.
The Church of God structure was believed to have been constructed around 1889 by laymen of all faiths in
Robertsdale.
The building was first used by followers of the Lutheran faith and in later years was used by
the followers of the
Presbyterian faith.
Down through the years the Church of God, and other denominations of the area,
played an important roll
in the religious life of the community. In times of hardship, which the area knew
well in the 1920's and later in
the war years the church contributed to the well being area.
In 1932 the church structure was remodeld both within and out, including a new addition to the Southeast
corner
of the building.
Ministers down through the years included Reverend Austin Belty, Reverend William
Drew, Reverend John
and Kathryn Daugherty Reverend Cartmill 1934, Reverend Bert James 1929, Reverend Shaffer.
